Abstract
Using various dynamic panel estimators we find that in all estimations carried out, there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between the growth of Portuguese SMEs and labour productivity These results allow us to conclude that possible negative effects arising from the increased formality of working relations are overcome: 1) by greater employee motivation; 2) by positive effects of greater specialization; 3) by greater control over their actions by managers and owners and; 4) by gains of scale efficiency.
